President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov met with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt, who arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the conference “International Transport and Transit Corridors: Connectivity and Development – 2024”. During the meeting, issues of sustainable transport and road safety were discussed, as well as the importance of the UN resolution adopted at the initiative of Turkmenistan to declare November 26 World Sustainable Transport Day, TDH reports.
Jean Todt noted the exemplary activities of Turkmenistan in the field of sustainable transport and emphasized the importance of active cooperation with the UN.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, in turn, emphasized that improving road safety is one of the priority vectors of the state policy of Turkmenistan. A clear confirmation of this is the annual holding of events within the framework of the month “Road Safety – Peace of Our Life”, as well as the ongoing improvement of the relevant regulatory framework.
Along with this, roads that meet international standards are being put into operation in the country. An example of this is the construction of the Ashgabat-Turkmenabat high-speed highway. The “Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport” created in 2022 promotes the development of a multilateral dialogue on this issue.
“Currently, much attention is paid to the development of motorsports in the country, and relevant work is underway to improve the skills of athletes involved in this sport,” the head of state said.
At the same time, the emphasis was placed on their participation in international competitions. In this context, it was noted that this issue is in the center of constant attention of our state and opens up broad opportunities for Turkmen athletes to achieve high results at the international level.
